Complete Newbie Novice

Postby pete4 » 08 Jul 2012, 23:04

Hi all , I guess that topic title will send a few shudders down your spine , but I am a newbie/novice , moving back to UK soon and want to get back into racing . I've had a few helpful replies from some of you personally but thought I'd throw it out to the masses and hopefully won't receive too much flak lol .

I'm in New Zealand at the moment till our house sells , I race at the Hawkes Bay RC Stock car club in a couple of classes . I'm not
looking to stay with the oval scene , and fancy turning left and right in the same race !! I'm sure you guys have been through this with other newbies/returnies but any advice would be greatly appreciated .

I'd originally asked about the mini/m0 tamiya chassis class and understand you don't run these , I'm guessing from your forum that the ''ECO'' class would be most suitable ? Please throw as much info as possible , I trawl the many forums and club sites but end up dazed , but that said keen to learn , I'll only be a short distance from your track so hope I can get to grips there . I've been offered a ''Team Associated TC5'' rolling chassis (here in NZ) for what appears to be reasonable money . Would this be a worthy purchase ?

Thanks in advance for any help , Pete

Sorry to butt in jon but the TC5 is and always has been notoriously hard to set up even for the experienced(lacks grip),put this chassis on Eco rubber and it will be a dreadfull !...The TC6 is by far a better car!!....Pete avoide the TC5 like the Plauge,Ive owned and raced one one!!!

hi all and thanks for your replies , funnily enough i asked the tc5 owner to put up a ''buy it now'' but someone else got it so its gone - which I'll now take as a good thing :-) Also on offer is a new un-used tamiya trf 416f rolling chassis with heaps of new spares , the guy bought and didn't use it as his local club folded . Any good ? Or a Schumacher mi4cx pro , similar spares package this ones done some racing indoor on carpet , neither car has electric/motor which is fine and both work out to be about £200 each .
thanks again , can't wait to meet you all , Pete

Both cars do well any where so either car will serve you well Pete, plus you should get help with set up with both at Aldershot...If one car has a down side it would be the Tamiya..spares are a little harded to get hold of, more expensive too.

PS im glad the TC5 has gone...Even though it "can" be fast its a pig of a car to set up compared to the above two..Defo not advisable for a new driver, twitchy and unstable even at its best!

Chassis choice is a personal thing, people will be bias to their make. TBH most of the current top makes will do you well .The only advise I can give as I dont intend to get into a "whats best" debate is to choose one of the most popular chassis at the club of your choice, this way you will get the best help with set up and spares...At Aldershot the popular makes are latest Xray,Schuy's and AE (TC6)

Come and have a play in ECO £9 set of tyres 17.5 blinky controlled motor £35 ish non touring bodyshell £20 soft setup and learn the ways of aldershot.

Then when you feel you are ready have a crack at 13.5 much more expensive.

Any car can offer good competition i'm currently peddling a mission 1 in 13.5 and i paid a £10 eh Jon?

hi , just to show what a novice i am i thought i'd replied to you guys but can't find the post , apologies all .

Hi G , you're definately talking my language as from what i've read so far the ''eco'' class sounds perfect for me . Not so much the budget but the close racing . When you say non touring bodyshell do you mean like the average saloon shell that comes most 1/10 kits ? I'd said in my lost post the 90''s stuff does it for me looks wise so this class sounds just what i was looking for .

thanks again everyone , can't wait to get home !! cheers , Pete

Hi Pete,
Echo what everyone says most chassis is suitable but not too old cos spares could be an issue.
Nick our local shop carry quite a range you can look at his webbo http://www.demonpowerproducts.co.uk see what he carries....
Popular around the tack are schumacher and xray mostly, then you get some serpent and a few hill-billies running TC-6's lol..... j/k
For ECO rules take a look at this link http://aldershotmodelcarclub.net/wp-con ... pdf?9d7bd4 the only thing that has changed a little is we have now relaxed on the no tyre additive rule, so you can run with or without depends on preference.
For the Hobby Wing combo I gathered it is quite popular over there so you should be able to get a system there easy too.
Cheers

Hi Remo

many thanks for your reply and advice , again I'm so pleased I'll be local to you guys as you've all been so helpful . You're right , the HobbyWing stuff is plentiful here , a local guy imports it and sells from home . I clicked on the link regarding the eco-class-proposals , do I understand right that I'd be legal all year round if I have the following (again apologies if I've missed the point somewhere)

(coming in the post) a Schumacher mi4cx . . . .
haven't got esc , motor or wheels/tires yet , is the hobbywing 17.5 combo the one to go for and legal ? I have a few , new , 3racing pre-glued wheels and tires , they're chrome 5 spokes (cheap stockcar bling! ) with treaded road car pattern tires , the car comes with a very slippery touring car shell , happy to buy a new one , team blue groove do an excellent copy of the tamiya vectra (mk3 cavalier) touring car from the early 90's . ??
the mi4 comes with lots of purple anodised pars and lots of new un-used plastic parts the same so I'm guessing its been modded/hopped-up ? are the purple shiny bits legal ?
Finally I haven't even asked about batteries yet , we can't run lipos only nimh sticks as the cars weigh 4kg plus and are full contact , so i'm guessing i have yet another new science to learn ?! Or does anyone still run nimh ?
I'm a quick learner so please bare with me , thanks again , Pete

Lol Pete, the HW Justock 17.5T Combo is the the one I would recommend... no problems with it at all. Please check the part number to make sure you got the sensored motor as there is a near identical one not sensored...

I think you can even get Holden shells over there too? That would be quite cool lol... Please remember the tyres are larger than usual touring wheels so wheel arches needs to be be cut to suit. Couple of us run 200mm shells so everything looks sweet :) (and more down force!)

All purple bits are ok... we only control the motor, ESC, shell and tyres...

4kg??. Surely that is a typo??? My car weighs 1380 grams race trim!!!

We all run Lipos here so simple no fuss, anything from 3300mAh to 5800mAh... the latter a bit overkill but I run other classes sometimes but in ECO you rarely use more than 2000mAh... I would suggest 3800mAh to 4400mAh a good all rounder between voltage stability and weight... you wont need more than a couple.

Cheers

''A typo'' , no its a tamiya . . . . ok , i'm not that naive lol . Yes 4kg !!! the streetstox (similar to english saloon stox) are all box standard tt01's silver can and std esc , fitted with steel front and rear nudge bars connected from front to back with steel round bar , then plonk a home made steel body on top , the minimum weight 'must' be 2800g - minus battery !!!! , then you get the stockcars (almost like brisca f1's but even more steel !) lots of hop-ups allowed , flashest motor allowed is the tamiya rz or tz superstock . both classes are full contact and have steel inner and outer barriers round the whole track - earplugs needed !! i was
amazed when i first went to watch how well they get round the track , just imagine your touring car with 2 more on the roof lol !
If i can work out how to put a pic or 2 on here i'll show you mine - so to speak .

As Les says , yes i'm very keen , i'm supposed to be doing my homework on the move home and buying my mum in laws house , shipping , dog passport etc etc , but all i'm worried about is carrying on with my hobbies lol .

I hear from another source you guys run the tamiya minis ?!?! I've just put one together here as they seem to be popular and i do understand them right from the off . Be really good to do both classes .

thanks again all , cheers , Pete
